Venues & Hire
The venues and rehearsal spaces managed by the Creative Practice Lab are available for student use and commercial hire. They are very popular with performance companies, independent artists, filmmakers, students and community groups.
The CPL Venues are currently closed for the holidays, and will reopen on Wednesday 23 January.
(For information on other venues on campus visit the UNSW Venues & Events website.)
Venues
Io Myers Studio
With a timber floor, easily accessible lighting grid and flexible Acromat seating, the Io Myers Studio is a multi-modal space with endless possibilities. A prized teaching space, the venue is also suited to contemporary performance, video screenings, film shoots, cross-media installation works, conferences and workshops.
Studio One
Studio One is a highly accessible, small black box theatre that has become a regular stomping ground for many of the University student groups and local community theatre companies. Also popular as a rehearsal venue and for small film shoots, Studio One is a significant contributor to the cultural life on campus.
Robert Webster Building - Rehearsal & Dance Studios
The Robert Webster Building is home to the School of the Arts and Media. This is where you'll find the School administration and many of its learning spaces. The building houses a variety of facilities including rehearsal studios, music rehearsal and recording spaces, screening rooms and media production and editing suites.
The dance studios are used as teaching spaces for the Dance Education program. These spaces are also used by dance schools and community groups during the evenings and are available as rehearsal venues throughout the year. Two upright Kawaii pianos are available to hire in the Webster studios upon request.
Music Facilities
A number of pianos and rehearsal rooms are available for professional hire through the CPL, and you can contact us for more information.
Sorry, we can't hire paino rooms to other students. However, you can become a member of the students union ARC for $69.00 and then you can practice on their piano for free between the hours of 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday.
Once you join Arc, you can simply make bookings by emailing reception@arc.unsw.edu.au or ringing 9385 7700. You must leave them with your student card and a $5 deposit and you can book a max of 2hrs at a time. It’s a great deal and you get lots of other benefits if you join as well. Visit the Arc website for more information!

Props and Costume Hire
The Creative Practice Lab manage a props and costume store with a truly eclectic assortment of items available to hire. From retro furniture to period lanterns or panniers to jeans, the props and costume store may just have what you need - including a bathtub. Free for students to use in their course work, the store is also open to the film and performance industries for all scales of production (this does not include ‘fancy dress').
Access to these resources can only happen between the following hours. These times will be strictly adhered to.
- Mondays: 1pm – 4pm
- Wednesdays: 10am – 1pm
- Thursdays: 1pm – 4pm
If you want to look at props or costumes you MUST still make an appointment (only within these hours) with the CPL designer, Paul Matthews: p.matthews@unsw.edu.au or 9385 5378.
The prop store is near Io Myers Studio (Building D9, near Gate 2, High Street, Kensington) and the costume store is on the ground floor of the Robert Webster Building (see map). Paul is based in Io Myers Studio and will walk you to the costume store if required. Feel free to contact him if you have any questions.
There is also a limited selection of equipment available for hire, including video and slide projectors, theatre and film lights. Course work and student activities take priority in the availability and allocation of this equipment. For information on equipment hire please contact Mark Mitchell at m.mitchell@unsw.edu.au or on 9385 4863.
