PLEASE NOTE: THE LAST INTAKE OF NEW STUDENTS INTO THE DANCE STUDIES MAJOR IS SEMESTER 1, 2015

Dance [verb] /da:ns/

To move rhythmically to music, typically following a set sequence of steps.

Dance at UNSW is next level. Musicals, movement and popular culture. Choreography, performance and the visual arts. No one will tell you exactly what rhythm, what music, or even what a “sequence of steps” means. That’s up to you.

Dance Studies at UNSW produces dance artists, writers and theorists ready to enter the performing arts industry and secondary and tertiary educational institutions as potential leaders.

Dance Studies offers a combination of theory and physical practice that explores, challenges and reimagines traditions in thinking, writing and making dance through both conceptual and applied learning.

Expanding the study of dance to include history, theory and analysis, interwoven with studio-based teaching with industry active professionals, Dance Studies at UNSW encourages students to locate their studies within a larger ecology of related national and international practices and knowledge. Dance Studies develops the understanding of dance as an art form and social practice from multiple perspectives: as a dancer, audience member and theorist.

Dance Studies at UNSW has strong ties with local industry through teaching staff and associated professional residencies, and is aligned with the existing ecology of dance practice in NSW with a focus on self-authored movement research, offering clear pathways to higher research in Creative Practice and Dance Theory.

Dance in Honours and Postgraduate studies at UNSW allows you to shape your own practice and focus on the next stage of your career. We’re seeking thinking dancers, critical movers, creative researchers.

UNSW scored 5 out of 5 in the 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia in Performing Arts.
