Linan Xian

This evocative and playful solo performance by actor and performance maker Linan Xian is inspired by a story in Calderon’s Life is a Dream and reimagined in a dialogue with the poetry of Emily Dickinsion.

The result is a fairy tale full of magic and mystery shifting between reality and the desires of dreams and like all fairy tales there are lessons to be learnt.

The story is of a king who is warned by a prophecy that his unborn son will become a monster and bring disaster to the country. So he orders the baby be imprisoned in a tower at birth. The child grows up knowing none of this but when the truth is revealed unexpectedly, the child born under a lie finds that life is no more real than a dream.

‘Having dreamt enough dreams,
I thought everything in a dream was true.
But a dream
is meant to be awoken from.’

‘Who am I?
I’m a snail on the Morning Glory.’

Linan Xian is a professional actor from China and a UNSW Post Graduate student. A Snail On The Morning Glory is a new work written and performed by her as part of her research in Theatre and Performance Studies.
