Jazz X Guitars

Join the music stars of the future for a thrilling concert exploring music – past, present and future.

G16 Jazz Collective, led by Sandy Evans, is delighted to present a wonderful cross-section of jazz compositions from the likes of Bill Evans to Thelonious Monk to Snarky Puppy. We showcase the virtuosity, creativity and dynamic improvising of these fine young musicians.

The four saxophone front line will play a thrilling up-tempo transcription of Charlie Parker’s solo on Dizzy Gillespie’s ‘Bebop’, as played by the iconic group Supersax. Kit Spencer and Natasha Atkins will sing Australian composer Michele Morgan’s ‘Sea of Glass’, a striking, poetic narrative that weaves seamlessly through odd time signatures following the speech rhythms. Driving the grooves is the accomplished rhythm section featuring guitar, piano, drums and both electric and acoustic bass. The bossa nova ‘How Insensitive’ adds a Brazilian tinge to the repertoire, as does collaboration by our percussionists with Guitar Ensemble. Don’t miss this richly nuanced and engaging concert.

The UNSW Guitar Ensemble, guided by Janet Agostino, brings together classical guitarists to enjoy ensemble music across a range of musical styles. In this concert they'll explore music from Brazil, from Celso Machado's Dances to the energetic intensity of Paolo Bellinati's "Baiao de Gude" and Clarice Assad's "Bluezilian". Along the way, the guitarists present arrangements of Ernesto Nazareth's "Quebra Cabecas" and Villa-Lobos' popular Choro #1, in collaboration with percussionists from the Jazz Collective.
