Moving On

Two nights of short performances and dance films celebrating dance at UNSW.

They arrived, they danced, they left…but no..here they come again.

For 21 years, UNSW’s undergraduate dance program nurtured dance artists and dance teachers, filmmakers and choreographers.

The program employed professional artists, academics and dance educators, providing focused learning of dance practices in the context of a multi-disciplinary school. It was the longest running BA (Dance) B Ed program in NSW and will be sorely missed.

To support the culture of dance at UNSW, and connect students with professional artists, the School and the UNSW Creative Practice Lab created the UNSW Dance Research Residency Program in collaboration with Critical Path Choreographic Lab. The residencies are in their tenth year and have supported over 20 artists and projects, some of which moved on to main stages as fully developed works seen around Australia and the world. UNSW became a home to independent dance and a community of artists.

So even though we have to say farewell to the undergraduate teaching of dance at UNSW, we move on into a new iteration of dance through honours and postgraduate study, building on the strong relationships with dancers and arts companies that we have developed. We will continue to support the development of dance as an art form, as an expression of who we are in the world.

Come celebrate what we have achieved and stay with us as we move into this new phase of art and research, dance and discovery.

PLEASE NOTE: The program is the same each night but with a different focus of celebration.

Thursday night the focus is our collaboration with Critical Path. Ten years of providing support to dance artists through the UNSW Dance Research Residency program.

Friday night our focus is the success of our undergraduate dance program. Its impact will never be forgotten!!
