Approaching Romantic and 20th Century Piano Repertoire with Small Hands

Many small-handed pianists avoid playing repertoire from the Romantic era and from the 20th century, as these compositions commonly require large reaches from the hand to achieve accuracy and efficiency. In fact, small-handed pianists are highly prone to developing injury and strain from performing these works, hindering their overall pianism. Therefore, small-handed pianists must apply alternative strategies to achieve the desired performance outcome through healthy piano technique. This recital encompasses works by Chopin, Grieg, Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev, involving strategies for the smaller hand such as finger and note redistribution, pronation/supination and agogic accenting.
