I provide an overview of editing A Companion to the Australian Media, published in September. At this time of rapid and revolutionary change in modes of communication, the Companion provides the first comprehensive, up-to-date historical account of Australia’s press, broadcasting and new media sectors.

Arranged in an A–Z format are almost 500 articles focusing on both the history and contemporary practice of media corporations, individuals, industries, audiences, policy and regulation since the launch of Australia’s first newspaper in 1803. Nearly 300 media scholars and media contributors were commissioned to write entries in their areas of specialty.

In this hands-on presentation, I will consider the epistemological and practical challenges of working across all areas of the Australian news media, and commissioning and editing 298 expert contributors.

Professor Bridget Griffen-Foley FAHA is an ARC Future Fellow and the Director of the Centre for Media History at Macquarie University. Her publications include Sir Frank Packer: A Biography (2000, 2014) and Changing Stations: The Story of Australian Commercial Radio (2009).
