Roumen Dimitrov

Roumen Dimitrov will present some of the main theses from his new book “Strategic silence: Public Relations and Indirect Communication” published in the “Routledge New Directions in Public Relations & Communication Research” series.

Michael Kent will respond with his take of Roumen’s argumentation.

The presentation and discussion will focus on the paradox of silence in professional communications, including advertising and public relations. How can we explain that, while practitioners use silence on a daily basis, academics have widely remained quit on the subject? Why are they silent about silence? Silence is neither separate nor opposite of communication. It is neither bad or good. It could be both. The key is to understand silences and their strategic uses as forms of indirect communication. Discussed are various types of tacit strategies such as communicative and non-communicative, discursive and non-discursive, explicit and implicit silences. Strategies of silence may either disengage (silence) or empower the listeners letting them co-construct the meaning and take ownership of the message. It could be both sustaining and transforming. Research should critically articulate and deconstruct hearable silences but also positively identify their “hidden transcripts” and reshape them into practical tools and weapons of struggle.

Roumen Dimitrov is Senior Lecturer in Public Relations and Advertising at the School of the Arts and Media, UNSW. He is currently working on the performatives of identity politics, European public diplomacy and strategies of noise and silence.

Michael Kent is Professor in Public Relations and Advertising at the School of the Arts and Media, UNSW. He conducts research on New Technology, Mediated Communication, Dialogue, International Communication, and Web Communication. Kent's theory of dialogic public relations is highly cited and an influential theory of public relations.
