Sirens Big Band

Sirens Big Band, Sydney’s super-collective join forces with some of Australia’s premier musicians; pianist Andrea Keller, vocalist Gian Slater and saxophonist Sandy Evans to premiere [A]part, a suite of music composed by award winning composer/trumpeter Ellen Kirkwood.

Ellen, a long-time Sirens member wrote the work for the band during an Australia Council-supported mentorship with renowned composer Barney McAll. It evocatively explores Ellen’s personal reactions to issues such as climate change, the global refugee crisis and the omnipresence of the internet, and will include mood enhancing visuals by video artist, Cleo Mees. Divided into four sections, the music is captivating and emotionally impactful, using rich, dark timbres, unexpected transitions and compelling rhythms. Solos and melodic features by esteemed special guests Sandy Evans, Andrea Keller and Gian Slater will showcase the immense talents of these musicians – some of the very best in Australia - and add their extraordinary creative voices to the music’s narrative

Sirens will present two concerts on August 5th at the Io Myers Studio, UNSW, where they are currently company-in-residence. The evening will also include a set of music from the Young Women’s Jazz Orchestra (YWJO). Established by Sirens Big Band in 2016 and supported by UNSW, YWJO is a dynamic 17-piece ensemble for young women interested in pursuing a career in jazz and improvised music. YWJO is proudly supported by APRA-AMCO
